What Is Cloud Storage?
Many companies are developing cloud
servers and storage space for your files, but what is
cloud storage? The
cloud, basically, means the Internet. When you store a
file in the cloud you are really storing it on the Internet.
Why would you want this? Great... you can store files on the Internet, but why
would you want to? Well, the main reason is
portability. Nowadays people are always very busy.
Most people would not have time to do things like;
drive home, copy their file to a thumb drive, and then
drive back to work and present their file. Wouldn't it be much easier if you could access your file from
anywhere? That is why cloud storage is so popular.
Once you place a file in the cloud it can be accessed
from anywhere that you have Internet connections.
It is also a really popular place to upload all of your
files as a backup. This means that if your computer
crashes and you lose all of your files, you can just get
them back from the Internet. This can be better than
saving your files on an external hard drive as these
can always get lost or broken. At least you know that the Internet will not get lost or broken. This also
means that you can select specific files from your
backup and download them, unlike some hard drives.
There are many services that help you to store files in
the cloud. It depends on what kind of storage you
want. If you want to store a handful of files in the
cloud so they can be accessed anywhere, then I
recommend that you try Dropbox.
Dropbox is an application that can be downloaded to
your computer or phone. Once installed you can
simply drag files into it and they automatically upload
to the cloud. Once your file is in Dropbox, all the
changes you make to it are automatically updated on
all of your devices. The best part is that it is free.
If you are looking for a service to backup all of your
files I recommend trying Mozy, Crashplan or Carbonite.
These are all great cloud backup services but all cost a
fair amount of money.
